Setting;;

You wake up in a hospital room, naked and with no memory of how you got there. The only person in the room with you is a strangely blank-faced doctor who says nothing. The doctor will not answer any questions but they do have clothes for you to put on. As soon as you’re dressed, the doctor says the first words they’ve spoken since you woke up: “You’re free to go”. The hospital is like any other hospital and every staff member you might find is exactly like the doctor who greeted you upon waking. Sorry, but you won’t find any information here. You might run into other people like you also on their way out, though.

The town outside the hospital is...well, it’s not much. There’s the hospital, a grocery store, a diner, a church and four large apartment buildings. That’s it. All businesses are run by the same blank-faced people as you’ll find in the hospital. There’s (badly hidden, ie FAKE OWLS IN TREES AND SHIT) cameras outside and inside every building and the town is surrounded by a dark forest. Cheery!

The air is disturbingly still and recycled-feeling, and there doesn’t seem to actually be any weather to speak of. The bird sounds are pre-recorded. Sometimes there will be the occasional moose call. Who knows why. Running into the forest is extremely ill-advised. There’s nothing out there but darkness, tree roots and eventually an invisible force field that keeps you from going any further. Also there might be wolves. Spoilers there are no wolves, just a sign that says “Here there be wolves”. Who wrote the sign? Probably the same idiot who programmed in the moose calls.

There are other people outside with you but they’re equally as confused. They won’t be much help, unless maybe this isn’t their first day and they feel like being helpful. The people running the diner and grocery store will offer you as much information as the doctors in the hospital did. Which means absolutely nothing, unless of course you happen to find “nice weather, huh?” or “will that be cash or credit?” informative.

If you happen to reach into your pocket, you’ll find two things. A slip of paper with an apartment number written on it and a device that resembles a smart phone. The apartment is where you’ll be staying for the foreseeable future. Home sweet home! Don’t burn it down. And the phone? The phone is how you'll be communicating with the other people who also ended up here. Isn't that convenient?

Locations;;

The hospital: The first location in the town that you'll see. It's a fairly non-descript building. Very white, very sterile, very stereotypically hospital like. The outside of the building is gray and the hospital doesn't even actually have a name. The sign outside just says "Hospital".

The grocery store: Like the hospital, the grocery store is a very boring building with no name. The sign outside just says "Food Mart". It's like any local grocery store you'd find in any small town in America. Aisles of canned goods, a produce section, a deli and an aisle of household essentials like toilet paper and dish soap. Don't worry, though, you don't have to pay for anything in the store. You can just go in, pick out what you want and leave.

The diner: Guess what the sign outside the diner says? That's right! "Diner". The eatery is a small, trailer-like building with both booths and counter seating. Very retro, small American town vibes going on here. There's even a jukebox in the corner. It doesn't work, but it's there. The menu is exactly what you'd expect from a place like this and like the grocery store, you don't have to pay for anything.

The church: The church is a bit of an odd place. Inside, it's exactly like your typical Catholic church. There's pews, stained glass windows, high ceilings and a raised stage where a priest would normally stand. Other than that, though, there's no indication of what religion the church actually follows. There's no symbols, no religious texts, no depictions of gods. The windows aren't anything religious either, just pretty colors and meaningless shapes.

The apartments: The apartment buildings are about as boring as can be, gray carpet on the floors and gray paint on the walls. Each building has four floors, with six apartments on each. There’s a painting of a rubber duck hanging on the wall in every hallway. Weird. The apartments are all the same. One shared living room with couches, a bookshelf, a coffee table and a small television that for some reason doesn’t have color picture. What year is this place stuck in? Who can say! One shared kitchen, with all the good kitchen-y things you’d expect. One shared bathroom, with a shower, toilet and a sink. Nothing fancy. There are also four small bedrooms in each apartment, all only big enough for a bed and a two drawer dresser. Each bedroom door has a number on it, ie: 1-1A.

The forest: The forest surrounds the entire town. It's full of tall trees and is for some reason always dark and foggy, regardless of the time of day. There's a sign within the forest that reads "Here there be wolves" but there are no signs of actual wolves. There are no signs of anything. Just trees and fog and dark. It's easy to get lost and there's always a danger of tripping over tree roots in the dark. Go far enough in and you'll run into what seems to be an invisible wall.
